Comparison between Reiki and Brennan Healing Science

I practice both of these modalities and teach reiki. I often get from clients the following question: What is the difference between these 2 types of energy healing?  While it’s not really easy to compare, it is sometimes necessary to clarify some differences and similarities between the two techniques.

Previous to all:

When a client is drawn to a practitioner the healing relationship that is starting between the two persons is the one needed in that moment.  Wellness, feeling better, and (maybe) at the end, healing is the result of the client’s inner work, supported by the energy, the techniques, the suggested exercices and reading, the healing container and finally the healing relationship of the practitioner for her client.

The therapist or practitioner brings all of her being to this relationship, including all prior life experiences and known healing modalities,. Whether they are applied or not during the session, they are part of the therapist presence and self.

The client brings all of him or herself as well to the relationship, including all previous life experiences that organized the present moment experience, and including the willingness and/or resistance to heal.

With all of this said, each client has different needs and the doorway to healing can come in many different healing modalities.  The client’s disposition is crucial to healing; healing comes from within, often assisted from the outside by way of traditional or complimentary healing modalities.

So, while we can compare healing modalities, we cannot predict what will happen during the healing session, neither the outcome or the personal transformation that can grow from it. Both techniques are detailled below (2 pages each, that I really encourage you to read), and of course, I would be more than happy to answer your questions if needed.

In general, similarities between Reiki and Brennan Healing Science

  • Both Reiki and Brennan Healing Science (BHS) work with universal energy, also referred as Chi, Ki, Prana, Source, etc.

  •  Both modalities are hands-on healing techniques used to transmit this universal energy. The hand placements and sequence are different, but both use the major joints and chakras (energy centers of the human body) as positions to lay the hands.

  • Both techniques get the client in a very profound relaxation state, an almost meditative state helping tremendously the possibility of self healing for the client.

  • It is what the client wishes for himself (herself), and what he will integrate in his / her life of what he/she understood during the session, that will imply or not the possibility of personal healing.

In general, differences between Reiki and Brennan Healing Science

  • Reiki is taught in 3 or 4 short sessions (1 or 2 days, equal to approx 32 to 50 hours of training) when Brennan Healing Science (BHS) is a 4 years intensive program (2000 hours of teaching approximately).

  • Reiki teachings imply some encouragement to do personal work for the student, who chooses or not to follow the advice. BHS requires a deep personnal work, to be able to work deeply within the energy field, along with an awareness of the client’s individual and relational dynamics. The student can not continue to study if the personal work is not completed.

  • Reiki teaches the basic and quality healing modality within a sacred container approach. Brennan Healing Science teaches a sacred approach combined with precise techniques, as well as a scientific and medical approach.

  • Brennan Healing Science will usually result in deeper work than Reiki with faster healing results, and transformative results for the client.

  • The personal work and energy BHS techniques give the practitioner tools to deeply work in the Human Energy Field of the client, an awareness of interpersonal relationships, as well as a real qualitative psychological approach, which doesn’t exist in Reiki.

  • BHS practitioner suscribe to an ethical and deontological chart, that doesn’t officially stand in Reiki.

  • BHS practitioner has learn anatomy and physiology as part of the training, which is not the case in Reiki.

Reiki

Origin

Reiki was created by Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk, who, in the late 1800’s, “rediscovered” this ancient healing art that has its origins in Tibet.

Usui taught Reiki in Japan for many years and one of his disciples, Dr. Hayashi, taught it (after using Reiki to heal her) to Mrs Takata, a feisty Japanese-American woman living in Hawaii and later in California.

Hawayo Takata condensed the original training of 7 initiations into 3 levels. With Mrs Takata, one would become Reiki Master trought attunements, which would give the possibility to teach and pass on to others. She taught Reiki to 21 Reiki Masters from the 1950’s to the 1980’s, who.eventually spread it to the rest of the world. These three levels of training and the attunements process are still accurate nowadays. Traditional Usui Reiki is called the reiki which enables to go back up to Mikao Usui himself.

However, « parallel » Reiki Master Teachers appeared, still teaching Reiki with the 3 levels, but with a bigger opening to the world, and a fee for each level very different from the official Reiki lineage (Attunement fees from 2 to 10 times less). Diane Stein is one of the first Reiki Master to get Reiki popularised (see her book « Reiki Essential »). The teachings are the same (except some little details) and healing intention is no different. This is the type of « modern » Reiki, and « open to everyone » that I teach.

Course content

Reiki has no prerequisites, except maybe the willingness to grow personally. It is taught in short courses and is easily accessible to everyone. This is why it became so widespread and popular so quickly.

While there are many Reiki associations and organizations, there is no « governing body » or even no « protocol » for teaching.  The teachings are handed down from Master to student, as faithfully as each Master is able and willing to do so.  So each Master brings his/her own knowledge to the teachings and attunements, this is why there may be inconsistency and variations to what is transmitted. But, generally, the course content is fairly consistent.  What varies more is the way in which it is taught, sometimes in 2 hours, sometimes in 3 days (which in that case justify a higher fee), sometimes superficially or on the contrary with great respect and sacredness.

During a Reiki training, sacred attunement rituals and healing symbols are transmitted to the student.  These attunements increase a person’s vibratory level and open up the energy field which helps to channel the energy more easily.  These attunements are a very powerful catalyst for personal growth. During Reiki sessions, it is the same principle : no specific techniques are shown (except the use of symbols). The student may be briefly introduced to the human energy field, depending on the teaching Reiki Master.

This is the content of the attunements :

How does it work ?

With Reiki, the practitioner channels universal energy through his or her crown chakra and makes it available to the client through the hands.  The hands lay on different places of the body (chakras, main joints, endocrine system, as well as any other part where the body needs healing). The traditional way of doing the session is to start laying hands at the head, down to the feet, and sometimes on the back.

Emphasis is placed on letting the client’s energy field draw whatever it needs.  The energy goes where it needs to go to do the work that is needed and ready to happen.  The Reiki practitioner simply allows the energy to move through him or her and does not direct the energy or « fix » things in the field.  No specific techniques are taught; the energy simply does the work.  The sacred symbols are used to connect more deeply to the client, to increase the power of the energy flow, to specifically help the healing of the physical, the emotional or the mental, and to connect at a distance for distance treatments.

The energy helps to balance the energy field, to release energetic, emotional, mental, physical and spiritual blocks, thus enhancing the client’s well-being.  The treatment is usually very relaxing for the client.

Brennan Healing Science

Origin

This healing technique was created by Dr. Barbara Ann Brennan, a former NASA physicist during 10 years, working on electromagnetic human field.  During her young age Barbara realized she had High Sense Perception (HSP), that she took care to keep and develop.  After her scientific years, as she kept her consciousness awakened through personal development work, she began to receive information from her spirit guide Heyoan. She became psychotherapist, and later started to work with clients as a healer. After a few years, she realized that to get an appointment with her, clients had to wait one year. So she decided to teach what she knows, and created her own school (1982 – Long Island, New York) so she could form healers using her technique, holistic healing with a scientific approach. In 2000, the state of Florida officially recognized the school as an educational institution and so the school moved to Florida. Since then, another school opened in Europe (2003, in Germany, now in Austria), and another one in Japan (2006).

In between all of this, Barbara Brennan wrote her first book “Hands of Light” which has become a best seller and a reference in the field of healing, followed by another best seller « Light emerging ».

Barbara Brennan works to bridge the traditional medicine with complementary medicine, so the two healing modalities could work together in the benefit of the patient, using her scientific approach and point of view. In the States, many graduates from the school work in connection with doctors and hospital staff (actually, many graduates from the school are hospital staff and doctors).

Course content

BHS is taught in a 4-year course program which is now recognized by the State of Florida as a Bachelor in Healing Science.  The school is currently working towards obtaining national accreditation.

BHS can be learned only in this school where the learning and teaching is consistent, rigorous and structured.  The only thing that is taught outside the school is the « Introductory workshop – Fundamentals of BHS » where one can get an overview of the BHS and can experience about 10 of the techniques taught at school, including giving/receiving a healing.

The BHS course is a comprehensive program of about 2,000 hours of teaching, plus a lot of personal development work ; both in-residential training (school) and distance learning modules.

Course content includes:

  • 20 intensive weeks in residence, 5 in each of the 4 years, meaning one week every two months for 4 years

  • 20 Distance Learning Modules (homework) with many required readings.

  • Approximately 80 to 100 practice healing sessions on « practice clients »

  • Approximately 60 techniques to work in and with the energy field

  • Integration of 16 psych-development self-awareness and relational skills

  • A minimum of 18 personal therapy sessions during each of the 4 years, total of 72 individual session for the practitioner to work on his or her own issues

  • Specific techniques to work with specific diseases

  • Development of personal High Sense Perception skills

  • Interpersonal energy dynamics

  • Creative arts

  • Professional Ethics and Practice

  • Anatomy and Physiology (minimum 100 hours)

  • Complimentary and Alternative Medicine

  • Yearly creative arts project

  • Case study and presentation

  • Senior graduation project, so the student can link the energetic aspects that he learned at school with regular life.

Personal work of the practitioner :

This intensive course content and personal work requires a huge personal commitment.  The student learns about personal wounding and dynamics in relationship with the self and others.  Much emphasis is put on awakening the consciousness which creates deep awareness and contact with the self.  This awareness and intense therapy work permit to open and deeply clean the energy field of the student, which allows him/her to amazingly increase his/her capacity to channel the energy, as well as a real deep profound contact with the client.

Moreover, specific techniques are taught to deeply ground into the Earth, regularly clean and charge the energy field, be able to regulate one’s own energy field, and prepare oneself before a healing session with a client.

How does it work ?

In BHS, universal energy is mainly drawn up from the root chakra (Earth energy), as well as all the other chakras and transmitted throught the hands.

Thus, a wider spectrum (frequency) of energy is made available to the client than in Reiki.

The “protocole” to lay on hands usually starts from the feet (on the front of the body) up to the head (hands lay on main chakras, main joints, endocrine system and any other part of the body that needs it).

BBSH practitioners learn techniques to work with the seven levels of the human energy field, to clean, charge and balance the energy field, dissolve the energy blocks, etc.

Below are some of the techniques available to the client, as the therapist is able to practice them:

  • Restructuration of lines of light which are the template for the physical body,

  • Repair of the energy field of organs and restructuration of organs

  • Restructuration and repair of chakras so that they can return to healthy functionality and metabolize universal energy to nourish the human body

  • Cleansing and healing of past life traumas, that may cause vicious circles in this life time,

  • Purification of energetic relationship links between 2 persons

  • Spiritual surgery, assisted by spiritual guides,

  • Hara re alignement (intention dimension)

  • Core Star reconnection (dimension of Divine Essence)

  • Etc, etc, etc
